Tips for Chatham Cafe Cabaret

Respect the Host and Format

Listen to the host—they’ll guide the evening. If they signal your time is up, wrap it up promptly. Each performer gets 5 minutes (or one performance piece), so don’t try to squeeze in extra time.

Perform in the spirit of the event: showcasing creativity and having fun!

Respect the Equipment

Handle any provided equipment, like microphones or stands, with care. Adjust mic stands carefully—loosen, reposition, and retighten. No mic drops, please!

If you’re using props or instruments, set up and pack up quickly to keep the event running smoothly.

Be Ready When It’s Your Turn

Prepare ahead of time! Tune instruments, check your props, and finalize your setup before you’re called to perform. This keeps things running on schedule and gives everyone their turn.

Keep It Comfortable for Everyone

Avoid content that could make others uncomfortable. Think: no profanity, excessive violence, or themes inappropriate for a general audience. This is a space for teens and families to have fun!

If you’re unsure whether your piece fits, ask the host beforehand.

Keep Intros Short and Sweet

A quick intro about your piece is fine, but keep it brief. Everyone’s here to enjoy performances, so focus on your act!

Originality Encouraged, Favorites Welcome

Share your own works (poetry, songs, skits, etc.) or favorite pieces that inspire you. If you’re doing a cover or reciting someone else’s work, make it your own!

Support Your Fellow Performers

Stick around to cheer on other acts. Being an engaged and supportive audience member makes the event more fun for everyone.

Be respectful and quiet during performances—no chatting or distracting behaviors.

Don’t Sweat Mistakes

Everyone’s here to try something new and have fun. If you stumble, just keep going! Applause awaits you no matter what.

Showcase Diverse Talents

We’d love to see singing, dancing, poetry, acting, improv games, or any unique talent you want to share. Be creative!

Engage With the Community

Meet fellow performers, give compliments, and share your appreciation for their work. Positive feedback makes everyone’s night brighter!

Remember: This event is about enjoying the arts and supporting each other. Have fun, be creative, and shine!

JUNE 15th  JUNETEENTH FESTIVAL We had a fabulous time meeting neighbors at Community Organizing for Racial Equity's (CORE's) 7th Annual Juneteenth Festival celebrating Black artists and creativity in our community!  CORE is a nonpartisan 501c3 non-profit organization working to build a network of community organizers working together to drive systemic change using solutions developed by those most impacted.

MAY 2nd - 4th  THE YELLOW BOAT Our first play, The Yellow Boat by David Sarr, was an amazing experience. When selecting our inaugural production the feedback from our youth, parents, and the greater community was honored. The common theme among the comments and suggestions received was to produce a piece that is ‘deep’, ‘mature’, ‘trust young people with tough topics’, and ‘reflects the community’. The Yellow Boat, a transformative story written by David Saar checked each box. The core values of Saar’s work are resiliency, creativity, and unconditional love. Those same values are seen and felt right here in Chatham County. Thank you to the remarkable cast, crew, and production team that brought this story to life! And thank you to all our generous donors and sponsors that made this fee-free play possible. And a special thanks to our community partners at the Chatham County Public Health Department, UNC Hospice, and Alliance for AIDS Services - Carolina for participating and sharing experiences in the very special Talk Back session.

Special thanks to our generous sponsor, WNXC.ORG, for believing in our mission and shining your community spotlight on The Yellow Boat.
